1. The Call to Share the Gospel

Jesus gave every believer a mission:

“Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” (Matthew 28:19–20 NIV)

You are called. Every disciple of Jesus shares this responsibility. Evangelism is not reserved for pastors, missionaries, or those with formal training — it is the calling of every believer. To follow Jesus means to obey His command to make disciples.

The apostle Paul reminds us of the power of this calling:

“For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes: first to the Jew, then to the Gentile.” (Romans 1:16 NIV)

When you share the Gospel, you are not relying on your own strength, wisdom, or persuasion. The Gospel itself carries the power of God. You are His messenger — called to faithfully deliver the good news that saves.

2. What the Gospel Is

The word Gospel means “good news.” Before you can share it, you must be clear on what it is. People cannot respond to what they don’t understand. The Gospel can be explained simply in five truths:

  1. God created us for relationship.
“So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.” (Genesis 1:27 NIV)

We were designed to know God, love Him, and reflect His image.

  1. Sin separates us from God.
“For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” (Romans 3:23 NIV)
“But your iniquities have separated you from your God; your sins have hidden his face from you, so that he will not hear.” (Isaiah 59:2 NIV)

Sin broke our relationship with God. It is rebellion against Him, and it carries consequences — separation and death.

  1. We cannot save ourselves.
“For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith — and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God — not by works, so that no one can boast.” (Ephesians 2:8–9 NIV)

No amount of good deeds can erase our sin or earn God’s favor. Salvation is a gift, not an achievement.

  1. Jesus is the only way.
“Jesus answered, ‘I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.’” (John 14:6 NIV)
“Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved.” (Acts 4:12 NIV)

Jesus died on the cross and rose again to pay the penalty for sin and open the way back to God.

  1. Through faith in Him, we are forgiven and made new.
“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!” (2 Corinthians 5:17 NIV)

Faith in Christ means surrendering to Him as Savior and Lord. When we do, God forgives our sin, restores our relationship with Him, and gives us new life.

This is the Gospel you are called to share.

3. Preparing to Share

This is where you are equipped. Evangelism begins long before you open your mouth. Preparation shapes your heart and life so that when opportunities come, you are ready.

  • Pray. Ask the Holy Spirit to soften hearts, convict of sin, and open doors.
“When he comes, he will prove the world to be in the wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment.” (John 16:8 NIV)

  • Live the example. Your life is your loudest sermon. People notice how you live, how you love, and how you carry yourself.
“In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” (Matthew 5:16 NIV)

  • Be ready. Study the Gospel so you can explain it simply and clearly.
“But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect.” (1 Peter 3:15 NIV)

Preparation is about surrendering your life so that your words, actions, and character align with the message of Christ.

4. Leading Strangers to Christ

This is where you are sent. Sharing Christ with strangers may feel intimidating, but God often uses unexpected encounters to plant seeds of faith.

  • Start with kindness. Acts of service, generosity, or compassion open hearts.

  • Ask questions. Gentle spiritual questions can spark deeper conversations: “Do you have any spiritual beliefs?” or “What do you think about Jesus?”

  • Share your testimony. No one can deny the reality of your story.
“They triumphed over him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony; they did not love their lives so much as to shrink from death.” (Revelation 12:11 NIV)

  • Invite response. Be bold to ask: “Would you like to accept Jesus as your Lord and Savior today?”

“Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” (Romans 10:13 NIV)

5. Leading Friends & Family to Christ

This can be more difficult because of familiarity, history, or resistance. But God often calls us to begin with those closest to us.

  • Be patient and consistent. Don’t pressure them, but let your life be a witness.
“Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day he visits us.” (1 Peter 2:12 NIV)

  • Speak the truth in love. Boldness without love is harsh; love without truth is empty.
“Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head, that is, Christ.” (Ephesians 4:15 NIV)

  • Share Scripture. God’s Word pierces hearts in ways our words cannot.
“For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.” (Hebrews 4:12 NIV)

  • Pray continually. Prayer is your most powerful weapon.
“Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” (1 Thessalonians 5:16–18 NIV)

6. The Prayer of Salvation

Guide them in prayer. This isn’t about magic words, but about genuine surrender of the heart.

“If you declare with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved.” (Romans 10:9–10 NIV)

Encourage them to pray in their own words, but help lead them to:

  • Confess sin

  • Believe Jesus is Lord and Savior

  • Commit their life to Him

7. After Salvation — Discipleship

Conversion is just the beginning. You’ve been sent not just to make converts but to make disciples.

“And teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” (Matthew 28:20 NIV)

Encourage new believers to:

  • Read the Bible daily (start with John or a reading plan).

  • Pray often — speak to God like a Father.

  • Join a church — community is essential for growth.

  • Get baptized.
“Peter replied, ‘Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.’” (Acts 2:38 NIV)

  • Share their faith with others immediately.

8. Key Verses to Use in Evangelism

  • “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16 NIV)

  • “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” (Romans 3:23 NIV)

  • “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 6:23 NIV)

  • “But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8 NIV)

  • “If you declare with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.” (Romans 10:9 NIV)

  • “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!” (2 Corinthians 5:17 NIV)

  • “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith — and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God — not by works, so that no one can boast.” (Ephesians 2:8–9 NIV)

  • “Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me.” (Revelation 3:20 NIV)

Closing Charge

The task of leading others to Christ may feel intimidating, but remember this: you are not alone. The Holy Spirit goes before you, convicts hearts, and gives you the words to say. Your role is to be faithful.

“How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them?” (Romans 10:14 NIV)

You have been called by God. You are being equipped with the Word and the Spirit. Now you are sent — to proclaim Christ, make disciples, and expand the Kingdom of God.
